The Structural Engineers Association of Massachusetts Young Members Group (SEAMASS YMG) has been busy over the past year hosting a variety of virtual events for young engineers across the country. This past December, two events were held: a virtual tour of a steel mill by Nucor and a Holiday Party jointly hosted by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers YMG and sponsored by DeWalt.62 people from across the country showed up (virtually) for the steel mill tour which gave attendees a front row seat for the entire steel manufacturing process. Nucor was able to share their knowledge and showcase the many material grades and shapes that they manufacture across the country. The annual Holiday Party was a little different this year but a fun time was still had by all. DeWalt hosted the trivia event and provided prizes for the winners.Like everyone else, the SEAMASS YMG was forced to adapt this past year and make the best of what they could. Virtual events were never really considered before, but 2020 made clear how a virtual component to all events can help foster communication and extend the professional network of young engineers across the Commonwealth and the country.
